WHAT TO BRING

  • A small backpack of 10/15 liters to carry things during the trek (water, camera, toilet paper, etc.)

  • A large backpack of up to 35/40 liters, which will be carried by camels during the trek; avoid bringing large bags or suitcases (max 10-15 kg).

  • 1-2 rolls of toilet paper

  • Matches/lighter

  • Headlamp for the night

  • Water bottle (which can be refilled with drinking water whenever needed)

  • Silk/cotton sleeping bag liner and/or sleeping bag (nomads provide a blanket and a mattress to sleep on); the sleeping bag should be suitable for low temperatures (10-15°C)

  • For washing: lavender or rose hydrosol, cotton washcloths, optionally wet wipes; for the last night, you can bring soap/shower gel. Towels will be provided by the hotel and at the fixed camp on the last night. If you want, you can bring a small towel for the trek.

  • A bag for your own trash and a hermetically sealed bag (for disposing of items like sanitary products).

  • Clothing for the desert: no short shorts or revealing/sheer clothing (wear a bra); something heavier for the night. Comfortable/loose clothes for yoga. For the trek, lightweight hiking pants, long Bermuda shorts, or harem pants (yoga type) are fine. Choose what you find comfortable that also protects you from the heat. Prefer long/short sleeves in cotton/linen, avoid tank tops.

  • Sunscreen with SPF 50

  • Hat or keffiyeh mandatory

  • Footwear: recommend trekking sandals or closed trekking shoes, sports/walking socks (like the compressive ones from Decathlon) to prevent foot swelling and sand from getting in while walking; for the night, plan for warmer socks (at your discretion).

  • A diary/notebook, a pen to write down your thoughts, emotions, ideas, etc.

  • Eye drops (artificial tears) useful in case of sand irritation, plasters for blisters, refreshing creams or oils post-walk, hydrosols.

  • A solar power bank if you need to charge electronic devices

  • Personal medication (especially if you have drug allergies)

F.A.Q.

What's the temperature like in the desert?

Daytime temperatures range from 23 to 32 degrees Celsius, and at night, they are around 10-18 degrees Celsius.

Are there any dangerous animals?

At this time of year, snakes and scorpions are still hibernating, so there's no danger. Instead, you might see some desert mice, birds, desert fish (a white lizard), and desert foxes (fneks, which, even if not seen, are present; you'll see their tracks). There is a possibility of encountering spiders.

Is the trek suitable for everyone?

The trek isn't difficult; it mainly involves walking on flat ground with some ascents and descents over dunes. The important thing here is "endurance," meaning being able to walk for 4-5 hours a day. In total, we will walk about 80-90 km, roughly 14 km per day.

In any case, there will always be a spare camel available to carry a person when necessary. The nomads are desert experts, know how to navigate, and will guide us on our journey; they are also very attentive, so they can find us at any time.

How does bathroom use work in the desert?

There are no bathrooms in the desert. So, everyone finds a private spot. You dig a hole for your needs. Afterward, you burn the toilet paper and, once it's well burnt, cover the hole back up with sand. This way, no waste is produced. If you use wet wipes, you'll need to put them in your personal trash bag; you can dry them in the sun and burn them in the morning before extinguishing the fire (before departure).

Always inform someone when you go to the bathroom, both day and night, so you can be found if necessary.

How do you wash in the desert?

You can use hydrosols (lavender, rose, etc.) with cotton washcloths for your face and underarms; wet wipes can be used for intimate hygiene. I recommend bringing a couple of cotton washcloths and a small cotton towel.

Showers will only be available on Friday at the fixed camp.

What if I feel sick?

We will be at most 50 km from Mhamid, and in case of medical need or emergency, they can come pick us up with jeeps and take us to Mhamid where there's a doctor. In any case, the travel agency organizes a first-aid kit. Make sure you have insurance that covers repatriation if needed. If you are on a specific ongoing treatment, bring some extra medication to avoid issues.

How do we eat and drink?

Ismail will ensure there's enough drinking water for the whole trip (and if it's insufficient, more can be brought at any time). Regarding food, it will be lovingly and attentively prepared by the cook. Food hygiene is very well taken care of. You can choose a vegetarian or regular diet; please report any allergies in advance.

How do we sleep?

The travel agency provides a mattress and blanket for each person. You can choose to sleep under the stars or in Berber tents, which will accommodate 4-6 people. At the hotel, the room will be shared. If you want a private room, you need to notify in advance and pay an extra fee of approximately 30.-

Is there network coverage in the desert?

You can get a Moroccan SIM card at the airport for about 20 dirhams. On high dunes and in certain areas, 4G works well. However, during the trek, my invitation is to "connect" with yourself, thus disconnecting from the hectic outside world. I and Ismail will have service. I'm available to give my number as a reference to your family for emergencies, and if you need to contact them, you can do so through my phone if necessary. For this reason, I advise against getting a SIM or, if you do, not to use your phone much, to detox from technology.

Do we need to change money?

For tips, change about 50 euros, and evaluate how much more you might need for various purchases. There's an exchange office at the airport where you can convert any unused local currency back to euros upon your return. Sometimes they offer a bank card, but it's not recommended because ATMs are not always available for payment in Morocco.
